Lyfe Jennings has made a bit of a blunder with his career recently, as reception to his latest album, 777, was mixed, mostly due to one specific song — the single, “Slave,” which drew a lot of heavily-critical comments, with many people claiming that the rapper went too far in comparing sex to slavery.
It is also worth noting that the controversy was not very noticeable at first, but grew to alarming proportions after Charlamagne tha God and Amanda Seales publicly stated how much they disapproved of the piece.
Amanda, in particular, went quite far with posting a video of herself making cringing faces while listening to the track.
The clip was picked up by Charlamagne later on, who reposted it to his own page, and attention to the situation blew up afterward. Lyfe has decided that he has finally had enough of the situation and spoke up about it publicly.
The R&B singer pointed out that he had released plenty of tracks with a positive message, but he never got any sort of serious attention for them as he did for his recent controversial piece.
He specifically pointed to “Boomerang” or “S.E.X.” as tracks that could have gotten much more attention by the public if they were so concerned about the messages in his songs.
In the end, though, Lyfe also wanted to make it clear that he was not trying to offend anyone, and did not anticipate that the song would be received in such a controversial light.
He said: “You know what’s weird is that y’all know that Lyfe done put out positive music my whole career. They ain’t never supported my stuff. You ain’t never supported Boomerang, you ain’t never supported S.E.X., you ain’t never supported all that good music I did for black people, and then you’re gonna try and put something like this on your page? That’s what’s wrong with you black folks right now, and you always wanna grasp on to the most negative but you can’t support the good.”
He apologized to his fans and anyone else that might have gotten offended by his work.
One person had this reaction: “I love you Lyfe your realness is what this world needs more of today 💯💯💯❤️❤️❤️Ppl get a grip it’s a freaking song !!! I have heard some really horrible lyrics degrading women . Lyfe. ❤️”
Another commenter said this about the song: “It’s crazy how people in this day in age are so culturally sensitive, yet in still everyone wants to be black until it’s time to be black. ANYWHO‼️ I live for this entire album, especially “TELL ME,” keep doing you!”
This music lover slammed him: “He lost me when he said this country to racially sensitive 😒😒 he def meant plantation slave sounding like a Trump supporter. This is da reason why they feel that they can continue to do whatever to us cuz we degrade and diminish ourselves just to make a dollar or look fashionable. Black people hate on each other but look to da people who hate us da most for validation and acceptance.”
Do you think Lyfe was wrong to release this song?
