Can the police arrest someone who is already in prison? In an ironic turn of events, singer R. Kelly might soon find out.
Reports indicate that the R&B crooner currently has an arrest warrant out for him because he has reportedly failed to appear for a court hearing that was scheduled recently.
However, according to his attorney, the situation was ridiculous since his client was in prison the whole time — and the court was well aware of that.
The artist is incarcerated at the Federal Metropolitan Correctional Center in Chicago on federal sex crime charges.
The lawyer went on to explain that nobody had ever approached his client while he was in prison, and no proper transport arrangements had been made.
It is not clear if the police are going to carry out the arrest warrant or not, although many have pointed out that this would be quite the comical development in an already ridiculous situation.
The singer’s attorney, Steve Greenberg, tweeted: “I was not served with any notice of court proceedings, nor was he. I did not resist his appearance, nor did he. He is in custody. It is the prosecutor who must obtain a court order for #RKelly to appear, and it is the prosecutor who must go get him if, as here, he is in custody elsewhere. They do not just give him a travel pass from federal custody.”
Things around Mr. Kelly are no laughing matter at this point though, as the “Ignition” artist is facing various legal problems that he might not be able to deal with completely.
His reputation seems to have taken a hit as well, although it can also be argued that he is now even more popular than before in some circles, mainly due to his impressive contribution to the music world over the past 25 years.
One person said this about the situation: “I’m all for imprisoning R. Kelly, but the girls’ parents should also be penalized for what amount to neglect.”
Another commenter stated: “I’ve got a big heart. I despise seeing a black man in front of a judge deciding his fate. Because they want to lock us all up. 1% of me feels bad for Mr. Kelly. But when I think about how he took advantage of and molested little girls for years, that feeling goes away. He and Jerry Sandusky both deserve life in the general population. I’m hoping that all the enablers get some time as well for trafficking and pimping out these teenagers. The time has come.”
Can Kelly win this case?
